San Diego is California’s second largest city with a population of 1.3 million in the city proper, and almost 3 million residents throughout the county. It is the eighth largest city in the United States; the county encompasses 18 incorporated cities. The city flower is the carnation.

It has long been inhabited by native people (as early as 20,000 years ago), but the first European to set foot here was the Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who sailed into San Diego Bay in 1542.

San Diego is renowned for its idyllic climate, and is a major tourist destination. There are many world class attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World San Diego and LEGOLAND to mention only a few. There are also at least 15 museums, about 6,400 restaurants, 92 golf courses, and a host multicultural festivals and celebrations.

In addition to various land-based activities, San Diego has much to do that is water related. With 70 miles of coastline, it supports year-round outdoor recreation, such as surfing, boating, sailing and swimming. It is a great place for a yacht charter.

More interesting facts about San Diego include:
