Submitting URLs in Search Engines

The process of submitting a site URL to search engines across the web for them to crawl is known as search engine submission. Traditionally this has been a paid service where SEO firms and individuals have charged to submit URLs to search engines. However, one does not need to pay for this service anymore as numerous search engines, some of which have quite a dominant presence, crawl the web and find websites by themselves. Google, the most popular search engine, sometimes even crawls some of the lesser-known search engines and find results from there.

Here are some tips you can follow while submitting URLs at search engines:

1. Do not use search engine submission software, as many of these links are out of date and do not work properly. Google's Guide for Webmasters says, "Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our terms of service."

2. To find other search engines you can search on Google itself. Use search words like "submit URL", "submit site" and "add to listing" and go through the top 100 results. Do remember to check the PageRank of an engine's homepage, as there are innumerable search engines. Any homepage less than PR7 is not worth.

3. Wherever a description is asked for, use the same description used for directory submissions. The homepage URL should always be placed in the submission box; any decent engine will crawl and find the rest of the pages from there.

Some of the top ranking search engines where you can submit URLs are:

Exactseek, PR 7, Est. 2000, Free - add up to 10 URLs
Gigablast, PR 7, Est. 2005, Free
