There is a lot of "Mystic-Mojo" talked about effective SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) but in reality it consists of only 3 key elements:

1) On-Page SEO - What is actually written on the web page
2) On-Site SEO - How users (and search engines) navigate around your website
3) Off-Page SEO - Links from other websites that lead back to your site (Backlinks)

Get those three elements correct and your website will get ranked and ranked highly.

On-Page SEO refers to the content within your website and what is visible to your visitors and in conjunction to On-Site SEO items, what the search engines will use to assess the relevancy of that page to a particular search phrase.

Pages should be informative and helpful but they should also have a purpose. Each page should be viewed as an entry point into your website as search engines will pull relevant results to specific pages not just your "home" page.

On-Site SEO is the part of your website that users will use to navigate around your site (navigation links) and search engines will use to assess your sites relevancy to keyword phrases (Meta tags and Title tags).

Off-Page SEO refers to links from other websites that lead back to yours. Having backlinks from websites that have both relevancy to your keyword phrases and that are seen by the search engines to be an "Authority" will count much more towards your own sites rankings than having hundreds or thousands of backlinks from non-entity websites.

Before starting an SEO Project, your first step is to plan out your SEO campaign. - Identify the keyword phrases your wish to have your website ranked for. - Create relevant content. - Create/Edit your website to be easy to navigate, relevant titles and tags and has relevant internal linking. - Build a list of relevant authoritative sites you wish to have links on that lead back to your site, preferably with the ability to use hypertext keyword phrase that points to the specific page on your website. - Get your links out there! Sometimes "quantity" can out-weigh "quality" but most of the time it's the quality of the backlinks that count.
