Drug Breakthrough for Mesothelioma Cancer

A new drug cocktail gives hope to patients who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer, a fatal form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

Although many patients currently can’t afford the cocktail, reports claim that the price of the drugs in it should be reduced in the near future.
Man Fights Mesothelioma Cancer Illness

Trevor Stagg was diagnosed last June with mesothelioma cancer after spending years working as a semi-trailer driver transporting fibro sheeting for James Hardy.

After his diagnosis, Stagg was given a year to live and now, six months later, he remains upbeat and positive.

Stagg attributes his positive attitude and general good health to the support he receives from his family, friends and church, as well as to the expensive form of chemotherapy he’s been receiving.
Drug Cocktail Available at a Hefty Price

Research has shown that a drug cocktail, which is a combination of Alimta and Cisplatin, can increase the survival rate for mesothelioma cancer patients by at least three months.

This combination of drugs, that Stagg has been taking, also has been proven to alleviate pain, reduce fatigue, and boost appetite.

However, the cocktail, also known as the “gold standard” treatment is too expensive for the average patient.
Reduction in Cost

According to reports, Alitma was recently added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for mesothelioma cancer, which will greatly reduce the cost of the medication.

The PBS listing means that instead of paying the original $24,000 for six cycles of treatment, mesothelioma cancer patients will only have to pay $31.30 per prescription.
